John Shultis is in his 4th year coaching with Metro American.  For two seasons, he coached Metro’s 15 South Blue team. Eight of ten players from the 2008 team, and a total of 14 of the 24 players went on to make their high school JV volleyball teams the subsequent school season, and six have progressed to varsity. Last season, he coached the 14 South White team, and two of his ten players made their high school freshman or JV teams. Previously, John coached elementary and middle school girls’ volleyball with Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC) in Fairfax County, Virginia, from 1999 to 2006. A number of the girls John introduced to volleyball with BRYC went on to play JV and varsity volleyball at five Northern Virginia high schools and some continue to play in college.  A few young ladies who coached or played with John have coached their own BRYC or club volleyball teams.
John believes coaching is a profession, and is committed to continuing education and training. He is IMPACT- and CAP I-certified by USA Volleyball—and working on CAP II now—and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and has attended Gold Medal Squared and other coaching clinics.  He constantly watches videos, reads books and articles written by established coaches, and assists and learns from more experienced Metro coaches regularly. John has more than 30 years of coaching and refereeing experience in a variety of youth and adult sports, including little league baseball, girls’ fast-pitch softball, girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, men’s boxing, men’s basketball, men’s slow-pitch softball, and men’s and women’s track-and-field and cross-country.
John graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1981, and earned his masters degree in Chinese studies from the University of Michigan in 1991.  John returned to West Point in 1995 to teach Chinese language and history, and later taught Chinese Mandarin for the Arlington County, Virginia, adult education program for eight years. While a cadet at West Point, John ran varsity track and cross-country and competed in boxing, winning the Military Academy’s light-heavyweight title in 1981.  In the Army, he continued to box, ran triathlons and road races, and coached and played unit sports, where he was introduced to competitive volleyball.
John and Gretchen Shultis have three daughters—all volleyball players, two having played for Metro travel teams—and a son.  They live with two old, fat, cantankerous cats and a beautiful Bouvier puppy, who eats volleyballs.

16 South Assistant Coach - Faiz Izzuddin

Faiz Izzuddin is in his first year with Metro American Volleyball Club and will be assisting John Shultis with the 16 South team.  Faiz was the assistant coach to the freshman volleyball team at Oakton High School and is currently the assistant coach to the freshman volleyball team at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  This year he helped the team to a 12-2 season.

Faiz started his volleyball career at Oakton High School where he originally gave volleyball a try as a conditioning program to his basketball career.  He fell in love with the game and developed his skills during high school and then college as an outside hitter and setter.

Faiz’s number one priority is improving his players’ skills and knowledge of the game.

Tournament Recap

Metro 16 South placed second in the silver bracket at the MVSA 16s tournament at the Discovery Center in Boyds, Maryland on March 20th. The "Rocket Power" girls fought hard all day, earning a 2-3 match record, and a

5-6 overall set record. All three matches lost were tooth-and-nail three-set battles that kept the spectating parents and coaches on the edges of their seats all day! In the silver bracket final against the NVVA Fairfax 16s, Metro 16 South "Rocket Power" lost the first set, but came storming back in the second to force the deciding third set, in which the NVVA Fairfax team prevailed 15-9.

After a slow 0-7 start in match play this season, the rocket boosters are kicking in for the Metro 16 South team, who since have reeled off a 7-6 match record and an overall 19-16 set record. The team is rounding into good form as the Regional Championships--their next tournament on April 10th--rapidly approaches.
