17 South Head Coach - Ahen Kim

Ahen Kim is in his first year coaching with Metro American Volleyball Club and will be coaching the 17 South Regional team. Currently, Ahen is the Assistant Coach at Catholic University of America where he has helped the Cards improve their record from 8 wins last season to 23 wins this season and a 3rd seed in the Landmark Conference. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Coach for Arlington Volleyball Club’s 16’s team, the Assistant Coach for the Valley Forge Juniors VBC 14’s Travel team, and a Coach for Franklin & Marshall Men’s Club Volleyball team. 
 
Ahen started his volleyball career at Cheltenham High School as an outside hitter and defensive specialist, ranking in digs for the state. He then went on to Franklin & Marshall College where he was the team captain for the duration of his volleyball career there. While at Franklin & Marshall, Ahen earned a B.A. in Sociology and American Government.
 
Currently, Ahen is a nonprofit program coordinator for Capital Partners for Education. Located in downtown DC, his organization serves low-income high school youth through out the DC-Metro region by supporting them through high school and having their college aspirations realized. 

 

17 South Assistant Coach - Kimberly Ray

This is Kim Ray’s first season with Metro American Volleyball Club. She will be assisting Ahen Kim with the 17 South team. Kim also has had experience in coaching with the Dominican High School camps at the Freshman, JV and Varsity level.

Kim started out her volleyball career at Dominican High School in Chicago while also participating in club volleyball with Impact VBC and Adversity Elite VBC.

Kim then went on to play at the Varsity level for Catholic University of America where she was a two year captain and made an all-tournament team. While at the University, she earned her bachelors in Social Work and a minor in Anthropology.

Currently, Kim is a student and is also in her second year of interning at the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute. In her spare time, she loves to take her dog Ralphie to the park, volunteer and cook big feasts.
 

17 South Assistant Coach - Alexandra Min-Tun

Alexandra Min-Tun is in her first year with Metro American Volleyball Club. She will be assisting Ahen Kim at the 17 South level. While living in California, Alexandra planned and implemented a one-day volleyball clinic for elementary school children where the money raised was donated to a Youth Activities Grant Fund that allowed children in the city of San Jose, CA to participate in activities in the local community centers.  We’re excited to have Alexandra join the MAVBC community!

Alexandra’s volleyball career started at Notre Dame High School in San Jose, California. While there, she also played for Fremont VBC, City Beach Bay Club, Point Break VBC, and Varekai VBC. In her senior year, she was named her team’s Most Valuable Player, WBAL Second Team, and she ranked in kills and digs in the West Bay Athletic League.

Alexandra then went on to play for The Catholic University of America where she walked on as a sophomore and became the starting right side hitter. That year her team placed second in conference to the reigning Division 3 national champions.   While at the University, Alexandra trained in and played many different roles: outside hitter, libero, and setter. She ended her career ranked in kills and digs and making an all-tournament team. At the University, Alexandra earned her BS in Architecture and Planning. 

Currently, Alexandra is a student and one of her passions is baking. She would like to pursue a career in the arts of pastries after graduation. She also likes to go on long bike rides, try new types of food, and play Rock Band. 

16 South Coach - John Shultis

John Shultis is in his 4th year coaching with Metro American.  For two seasons, he coached Metro’s 15 South Blue team. Eight of ten players from the 2008 team, and a total of 14 of the 24 players went on to make their high school JV volleyball teams the subsequent school season, and six have progressed to varsity. Last season, he coached the 14 South White team, and two of his ten players made their high school freshman or JV teams. Previously, John coached elementary and middle school girls’ volleyball with Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC) in Fairfax County, Virginia, from 1999 to 2006. A number of the girls John introduced to volleyball with BRYC went on to play JV and varsity volleyball at five Northern Virginia high schools and some continue to play in college.  A few young ladies who coached or played with John have coached their own BRYC or club volleyball teams. 
John believes coaching is a profession, and is committed to continuing education and training. He is IMPACT- and CAP I-certified by USA Volleyball—and working on CAP II now—and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and has attended Gold Medal Squared and other coaching clinics.  He constantly watches videos, reads books and articles written by established coaches, and assists and learns from more experienced Metro coaches regularly. John has more than 30 years of coaching and refereeing experience in a variety of youth and adult sports, including little league baseball, girls’ fast-pitch softball, girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, men’s boxing, men’s basketball, men’s slow-pitch softball, and men’s and women’s track-and-field and cross-country. 
John graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1981, and earned his masters degree in Chinese studies from the University of Michigan in 1991.  John returned to West Point in 1995 to teach Chinese language and history, and later taught Chinese Mandarin for the Arlington County, Virginia, adult education program for eight years. While a cadet at West Point, John ran varsity track and cross-country and competed in boxing, winning the Military Academy’s light-heavyweight title in 1981.  In the Army, he continued to box, ran triathlons and road races, and coached and played unit sports, where he was introduced to competitive volleyball.
John and Gretchen Shultis have three daughters—all volleyball players, two having played for Metro travel teams—and a son.  They live with two old, fat, cantankerous cats and a beautiful Bouvier puppy, who eats volleyballs.

 

16 South Assistant Coach - Faiz Izzuddin

Faiz Izzuddin is in his first year with Metro American Volleyball Club and will be assisting John Shultis with the 16 South team.  Faiz was the assistant coach to the freshman volleyball team at Oakton High School and is currently the assistant coach to the freshman volleyball team at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  This year he helped the team to a 12-2 season.
 
Faiz started his volleyball career at Oakton High School where he originally gave volleyball a try as a conditioning program to his basketball career.  He fell in love with the game and developed his skills during high school and then college as an outside hitter and setter. 
 
Faiz’s number one priority is improving his players’ skills and knowledge of the game. 

15 South Coach - Ricky Sorlouangsa

Ricky’s club coaching experienced started with Metro VA 16U Boys as the head coach. He is now in his 6th season with Metro American VBC. He started coaching with Metro American VBC since 2004. He then coached at a high school level as the head coach at the Academy of the Holy Cross (2002-2004) in Kensington, where they were the semi finalist and finalist in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (2004). He has coached our top 13s (2005-2006) and 15s team (2006-2009) in the south region, where he has lead his team to placed second in the Regionals and South Atlantic Championships. He also coached middle school with Fairfax Police Youth Club (2009) as the head coach. His coaching philosophy is to teach his players the opportunity to be successful and to improve their fundamental skills. Ricky has completed numerous coaching courses over the years. He is both IMPACT and CAP II certified. Ricky's volleyball career began with the Tidewater Volleyball Association (1993). He then went on to play for the Old Dominion University 's Men's Club Volleyball (1996-2000) where he was the team captain. At Old Dominion University, Ricky earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. Currently, Ricky is in his 10th year as an athletic trainer. During his spare time, he likes to read, play volleyball and ride his sport bike on the race track.

15 South Coach - Jerry Reyes

Jerry is in his third year with Metro American VBC. Last year, he was the assistant coach for the 16 South regional team. He has been involved with volleyball for over 10 years and has a great passion for the sport. Jerry's goals are to help players improve their basic skills, challenge and promote sportsmanship, and develop self-confidence to play the next level.. He started by playing volleyball during high school. While attending the University of Maryland, he was an assistant coach at Oxon Hill High School, who made the playoffs every year. He has been involved with the USAV adult club volleyball and has played with the famous "Wicked Carrots" team. Jerry is IMPACT and CAP I certified. . When he is not coaching, he works for the DC government. He enjoys playing basketball and riding his mountain bike.

14 South Coach - Phil Oshida

Phil is in his fourth year of coaching junior girls volleyball and this is his third consecutive season coaching Metro 14s with Patty Marrero.  Phil emphasizes doing the right thing at the right time in the right way.  He considers coaching as an opportunity to help young players learn about volleyball skills, mental preparedness, leadership, supporting your teammates, and enjoying the game.  He has great fun helping the 14s improve over the course of the season and seeing their joy as they master new skills.
 
Phil plays USAV adult mens B/BB volleyball and is also a member of an over-55 mens volleyball team that annually participates in the US Adult Open Volleyball Championships and the Huntsman World Senior Games.  Phil finds playing and coaching are still great fun!
 
Phil and his wife of 31 years, Sandy, met while playing recreational volleyball at California State University Long Beach in the 1970s.  Their daughters Caitlin and Macara have recently played volleyball for the University of Mary Washington and Metro American VBC/Woodson High School, respectively.
 
Phil is employed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where he works to protect the Nation's drinking water.

14 South Coach - Patty Marrero Basso

This is Patty's 3rd year coaching club season with Metro American Volleyball Club. Last season she coached the 14 South Red Regional team.

 

 

Patty started out her volleyball career playing at her hometown San Juan Puerto Rico High School, Colegio Nuestra Señora de Belén (1975 - 1977). She then went on to play for the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus (1978 - 1982). Patty was a member of the Federación International de
Volleyball Puertorriqueña Junior (1975 - 1976) and Superior Womens Professional League Teams(1977 - 1983). She also played with the Puerto Rico National Team (1977 - 1983) and participated in many International and Invitational Competitions like: Centro American and Caribbean Games 1977, Confederación de Norteamérica, Centroamérica y el Caribe (NORCECA - 1978, 1980) and Pan American Games 1979.
Patty then joined the Army in 1984 and played Inter Post Recreation League (1984 - 1992) participating many times as the Team's Captain/Coach for Women and Coed Teams.

Patty has 12 year old twin boys, Antonio and Cristian. She works as a Senior Systems Analyst for ASM Research Inc, Fairfax VA. In her free time she enjoys reading and participating in her Tai Kick, Cardio Kick Boxing classes.
 

12 South Coach - Rick Dunetz

Rick Dunetz has been coaching with MAVBC since 2003. Rick has coached the 14 Regional South team, achieving a Silver Bracket Championship and also the 15 Regional South team, achieving a Silver Bracket Semi-Final finish. Rick manages the coaches in the south as well as coaches additional skills clinics during the season. He is also doing much of the behind the scenes work, including updating and managing the MAVBC web site.

Rick has also coached in other areas. He was the Head Coach for the Braddock Road Youth Club (2001-2002), the Assistant Coach for West Springfield High School (2002-2003), and the Head Coach at West Springfield High School (2003-2006). In 2004 his team won the District Championship and the Regional Semi-Finals. In 2005 and 2006 his team lost in the District Final and the Regional Quarter Finals. He is now the Head volleyball coach at Annandale High School. Rick is numerous coaching certification to include Gold Medal Squared and CAP I Certifications.

Rick is the Founder and CEO of The Side-Out Foundation where he works to raise funds for treatments and therapies against breast cancer. In his spare time he loves to listen to and perform music, as he is a singer and a trombone player, read, and work on his charity doubles tournament that raises money for Breast Cancer research. Rick is married to Akiyo.

12 South Coach - Storm Peterson

Storm (Richard) Peterson is in his second season with Metro American Volleyball Club. Last year Storm coached with the 14 South White team and is currently the 12 South coach.   He is also coaching his club team at Ft. McNair. 
 
Storm attended the Miami University of Ohio for his undergraduate degree and the Industrial College of the Armed Force at National University, Ft. McNair for his Post Graduate degree. He has a BA in Political Science, a MA in Strategic Leadership and will have a MS in Supply Chain Management.
 
Storm is currently a full-time student at the National University. He has been in the military now for over 21 years. Some of his highlights include commanding four different units and running the Bagram airfield in Afghanistan. 
 
Storm’s wife and best friend, Yoshiko, will also be helping out with the team when she can. They have 3 children, Drew, Dakota (who plays for MAVBC!) and a beautiful baby girl, Donica.
